Challenge

Chelsea Sugar (NZ) had a few challenges to overcome in this project. First and foremost was the need to pack 1kg to 3.5kg bags of sugar products into trays and then feed the trays into an existing shrink wrapper. The weight of the bags made manual packing into pre-erected trays difficult and labour-intensive.

The major challenge we had developing the machine was its location. Situated on the second story of an older building meant that the machine had to be designed to be broken down into small enough sections to fit inside a small service elevator.

Solution

The product we developed to address this issue was our Tray Packer, which includes two HAWK robots to collate and load products onto a flat die-cut tray. Hot melt glue is applied to the trays before they are folded up, formed and compressed around the loading head of the HAWK. The tray forming heads and toolsets are all fixed size per SKU, meaning the operators simply remove the change parts modules and replace them with a new size; there is no need for operators to manually adjust anything; simply drop in new change parts and run. Designed to operate with a harsh, sugary environment in mind, the Tray Packer is the perfect machine for this application.
